^^^ (just for you, [livejournal.com profile] ennienyc!)

Backed the van right up to the cabin so we wouldn't get too wet from the alternating mist and rain, and unloaded everything so we could fit all our gear (with Cord's added stuff). Not too much of a challenge, but keeping the small one dry during the process was tricky. Clay found the cabin key, hooray! Didn't have time to wander the tiny little graveyard Clay had found at the back of the campground, but it looked fairly new (I do like the older ones).

Cordell kindly made breakfast, which was the ramens he'd chosen for us at the international market a few days ago that we didn't eat the night before so the boys could be in the Magic tournament. They were actually really good... the one Clay got was called "UFO" and tasted like sweet barbecue. Mine had an amazing display of freeze-dried technology... once the boiling water had reconstituted everything and the lid was completely removed, you saw this 4-inch round bit of tempura-waffle thingie, sprinkled with bright orange bits that looked like raisins but tasted like fish, and this sculptural wonder was surrounded with half a dozen little yellow balls about an inch around, all floating on a bed of noodles and flavorful soup. Truly a work of art... if I hadn't been so hungry, you'd have gotten a picture!

We got out of the campground around noon, which meant we had to scuttle the Science Center (and, I'd completely forgotten the City Museum!)... so we decided to start planning another St. Louis trip soon. But we were all ready to head home, and nobody sounded too disappointed. We wound up on a smaller highway, which took a bit longer, but wound through more beautiful forests and waterways. The drizzle followed us home, but it never got to heavy rain... not much traffic, very easy driving.

The MP3 player gave up on batteries, though, so we didn't finish the H2G2 series. The good news is that Clay did finish reading the final Lemony Snicket book. I'm still undecided on how I feel about that book... that's probably another post, poke me if you want to hear about it.

Lovely drive, only slightly squirmy child (who didn't fall asleep until very near the end!), made it home before dark. House was kind of a mess, but my darling spouse had made me fresh bagels so all is forgiven. Plus, once the baby went to sleep, we had a welcome-home party that I won't forget for a long time! I guess he really DID miss me...

The van isn't entirely cleaned out yet, although I try to drag in something else on each trip. We got the boys to YuGiOh yesterday, and I've restocked the kitchen, and today I spent a largish chunk of time getting caught up on the local newspapers.

Today, Linc asked "New cabin?" I guess he's ready to roll again! Maybe next spring... Toronto? Montreal? New York? Vermont? possibilities... possibilities...

welcome home
