our trip to NY was great... the only bummer was a migraine that consumed most of saturday, but since the point of the trip was for lincoln to spend quality time with his aunt and uncle, it wasn't all bad.
we ate chinese, japanese, british, italian, and indian food... YUM! plus we saw the gates in central park, and i visited Yarnivore (http://www.yarnivore.com), and scored a couple of cute toys and clothes for linc, and knitted...
i asked my sister about her knitting projects, and she said she had one thing she was working on, but probably wouldn't finish: a scarf she started knitting for her daughter-in-law, who died last fall after battling cancer. this sounded pretty sad to me, so i asked her if i could work on it. she was OK with it, and i used up most of the rest of the ball of yarn on it (she did a few rows, too). i taught her how to bind off, and how to weave in the tails, and she finished it up. i think she's going to donate it to a shelter or to someone who needs it. it felt good to do something while remembering kelly, and now maybe my sister will think about starting another knitting project, now that kelly's scarf is done.
while i was there, i found i'd done another mistake on the chemo cap i'm knitting for another friend (sue, in california, with terminal brain cancer). i was working with this yarn and pattern: http://www.berroco.com/exclusives/chemo_cap-scarf.html. it drove me nuts... i had to rip it out three times. this yarn is super soft, which is good, but if you drop a stitch, you are doomed. it is impossible to pick up again. and i was sad that instead of meditating on the vivacious, funny, intelligent and kind woman i was making this for, i was cursing the yarn and grinding my teeth. i finally set it aside (and worked on kelly's project) until i could change my attitude... from "will i EVER finish this darned thing?" to "i'm making a gift for my friend, and she is worth it!" i did finish it, on the plane home.
linc was really difficult on the flight out... i think he was bothered by the pressure and some internal unhappiness. he nursed and kicked and howled for the whole flight, until about 20 minutes before touchdown when he finally conked out. coming home was easier, thankfully... he did his thrashing and nursing for the first hour, but wasn't mad or gassy, just active and wanting to play. then he slept hard for the last hour and a half, hooray! and the midwest airlines cookies really are pretty good...
i'll try to get pictures of our trip up soon. just a quick entry now, though, to let you all know we made it home OK!
