We've started using two delivery services that showcase local producers: Oberweiss and Irv & Shelly's Fresh Picks.
The first is mostly for the milk, the second is mostly produce (plus some other things like eggs and meat). They both source from local farms, if possible. Fresh Picks is all the best things about a CSA and none of the bad ones. You can either go for the CSA-like box of veggies, or you can pick and choose among their fairly good selection of items and make up your own box.
Both deliver to your door, and you can either set up a standing order, or customize it each week.
Doing local dairy and meat means it will cost more, but I'm OK with cutting back a little bit to both support the regional farmers, to each in season, and to get the grass-fed meat, organic produce and non-factory-farmed eggs.
We'll see how they work out in the long run, but since we've started using them in the last few weeks, I've been pretty happy. And am I the only one who gets a little thrill when stuff is delivered? Even when the mailman stops by, I still jump up and see what it is.
In other news: I'm driving out to California in April, and I've decided to try to set up braiding classes along the way to help pay for gas and lodging and food. It's the Twisted Trail Tour of 2011!
Hopefully, this will be a map with my planned route:

And here's a FaceBook page for the tour. I'll try to update both as I nail down teaching gigs. If anyone out there has tried something like this, and has some words of advice for me, I'd LOVE to hear them! I can't seem to find much out there except for how to tour with your band and not kill each other. I know Scott McCloud road-schooled his kids across the country and back, but he had an agent and a new book to promote. Thanks for any ideas you can send my way!
That's it for the mo. Carry on!

Date: 2011-02-23 11:55 pm (UTC)We did a 6-month no delivery fee deal, so we'll re-evaluate how we feel about it then. Thanks for the info... next time I should post before I sign up, hm?
