Resting in peace

While waiting for the landlord to call, I decided to explore the old
cemetery that lies one block west of the house. This is a pic of the
oldest deathdate I could find: 1855. I'm sure there were older ones, but
they were illegible. There's a caretaker, but he was busy. I'll pester
him about history another day. It's a lovely place, a couple of acres.
I'm looking forward to getting to know it better... I loved living next
to the cemetery in Davis.

You lived next to the cemetery in Davis? *I* lived next to the cemetery in Davis -- in the funky apartments at 8th and Pole Line, about 1975-1976. My big white standard poodle Mac used to cruise around the cemetery and come back looking like a Siamese dog, black creekbottom mud all over his nose and up to his armpits.

I was on the north side, on Regis, just off Loyola. Our house backed up to the cemetery. My kids spent many happy days running the little labyrinth that the caretaker, Joe, cut into the grass there. I served with Joe on the Davis Food Co-op board of directors. And I wrote a scavenger hunt for the homeschoolers about gravestones there. We moved further down Loyola in '97, when we bought a house (yes, I'm still kicking myself for selling it), but we still visited every once in a while.
