That is absolutely wonderful!!

One of my favorite people in the world is the Dean of Mathematics at DePaul (Lynn Narasimhan), who I actually referenced in an entry (http://hahathor.livejournal.com/187516.html) just a couple of days ago. My friend Joy lives there too, she's a fiesty sarcastic vegetarian with a wicked sense of humor. I can proffer virtual introductions when it's time.

And now I have more reasons to visit! I love Chicago!

And, congrats!

Congratulations. Chicago is a marvelous city with a crappy climate. Culturally it is better than San Francisco in pretty much any measure (theater, comedy, museums, architecture, music of all sorts) and it even has beaches a few blocks from downtown. The public transit is fairly fast and efficient. Did I mention the weather sucks? But you are probably used to that by now, apart from the wonders of lake effect snow.

Things to check out:
Free concerts in Grant Park
B.L.U.E.S. on Halstead Street - best hole in the wall blues bar anywhere.
Anerican Gothic at the Art Institute. Also the best collection of French Impressionists outside Paris.
Second City comedy club. Sketch and improv comedy. Most of the stars of SNL started out here.
The totem pole, the German U-boat, the viking ship, Chicago's Picasso and the giant silver bean.
Sit on Shakespeare's lap, ride the very front seat of the front car of the El around the Loop, and what the hell, go up the Sears Tower.

I am so excited for you both I'm all teary. Bill can tell you about the time he, Josh, Kevin, and I walked halfway across Chicago to get to Wax Trax records. Aside from that, I know the food is great, the bicyclists are crazy, and you'll be getting a visit from us.

Thanks! Hey, apparently this means I've gotten a promotion to Faculty Wife. Got any words of wisdom for me? (I know, you're primarily Faculty yourself, but I figure there's been some element of FW in your life also, right?)

The role of Faculty Wife is, I'm a little sorry but mostly glad to say, much less vital and well-defined than it used to be in, say, the 60s. I myself hardly do anything besides attend the Secret Santa Christmas Luncheon. (Come to think of it, I don't even do that anymore.) Oh, plus I host an annual Hanukkah potluck at my house, but I'd be doing that anyway. Faculty wives, in general, though, are often really interesting women (though from the looks of your friends-list, you seem to know enough really interesting women to fascinate you for a lifetime!). Faculty husbands are sometimes interesting too. As for my being Faculty--well, not really. I just teach a class here and there, now and then, when I feel like it--whenever I start thinking that maybe I'd like a reason to get dressed in the morning. At any rate, you'll be a terrific faculty wife. Just steer clear of Reading Groups, Creativity Workshops, and Fund-Raising Committees. And maybe start a juggling club instead? Or teach knitting classes, cooking classes, braiding classes---my head swims with all you can contribute to that school!
