So we have a few kids' books that are truly beautiful to look at, and have lovely stories that go along with them. I could read them over and over again. I'd like to find more like them, and figure that posting here might help me do so.

The one that started this line of thought is "The Rainbabies," by Laura Krauss Melmed and illustrated by Jim LaMarche (oh, cool, this duo have another one: "Little Oh").

Others that come to mind are "The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey," and "Farmer Schultz's Ducks."

I do like the colors, rhythms and motion of the Audrey and Don Wood books ("The Napping House," "Quick as a Cricket," "Piggies") but those are a bit younger than I'm aiming for (thought "Heckedy Peg" and "King Bidgood's in the Bathtub" come close). This is also true of books like "Grandfather Twilight" and "Tuesday." But if the art is remarkable, do mention it.

Any nominees?

We love The Rainbabies! I love the art and the story in Old Jake's Skirts by C. Anne Scott. Sometimes I Like to Curl Up in a Ball is great, the art makes me smile. I love books.

'Twelve Dancing Princesses 'retold by Marianne Mayer, beautifully illustrated by KY Craft

'The Enchanted 'by Ruth Sanderson (Also gorgeously illustrated by her)

'Warm As Wool' by Scott Russel Sanders illustrated by Helen Cogancherry

'The Weaving of a Dream' a Chinese folktale retold and illustrated by Marilee Heyer

The one thing I am completely irrational about is the awesomeness of "Scuppers the Sailor Dog" by Margaret Weis Brown. I will insist that it belongs on your list, and you might disagree, but you will be wrong. :)

My kids loved "Kenny's Window" as they got a little older. Also a strange one called "Who Needs Donuts?" which has become a catchphrase in our household.

I love anything illustrated by Leo & Diane Dillon: Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears; The Sorceror's Apprentice; Pish Posh Said Hieronymus Bosch.

I recently discovered Joseph Had A Little Overcoat, by Simms Taback. The pictures are collages of paper and fabric, very topical to the text.

I've always loved Barbara Cooney's painted illustrations, particularly for Miss Rumphius (probably my favorite children's book).

I love simple illustrations like Blueberries For Sal (navy-blue-and-white) and Ezra Jack Keats (colorblock paper collage).

Anything illustrated by Kinuko Craft such as Vasilisa the Brave. I also have a beautiful book called the Mousehole Cat by Antonia Barber illustrated by Nicola Bayley. I always cry when I read it. Small Cloud is a beautiful little book that tells the story of the water cycle in an endearing way. The Kapok Tree is beautiful and has all the rainforest animals coming to a sleeping man telling him why not to cut down their tree. I have lots more. I wouldn't let Mari get rid of any. I sort of collect illustrated storybooks. You're welcome to come over sometime and look through my collection.
