Davis trip is, as you may have surmised, bittersweet. Great joy and
giddiness at seeing Suzanne, Mary, Eve, Cindy, Diane, Carrie. Deep
sorrow at the appearance of cancer, hard stories of challenges with
children, and two suicides. I feel twinges of guilt, having received so
much from my friends for so many years, and now not being here when they
are meeting such difficult days. Doing what I can, resolving to stay in
touch better...

I left a note, but haven't seen her. I can certainly understand why she wouldn't want to see me with a rambunctious 4-year-old tearing around.
