boardman marina

we got to harrington a few days ago with no problems other than a busted
scrollwheel and a laptop that won't start up. linc seemed to charm his
grandparents and great grandma... but he got a bit rambunctious being
indoors so much. i bundled him in all his snow gear and we went tromping
around in the snow every day, but we'd have to give up after about an
hour. we made lots of blanket forts, built the (very fiddly) electric
train, and got a dozen library books (i'd forgotten how brutal the
curious george story was!).
grandma lorraine, who has been doing the main care for her mom at home
while she heals from a broken bone in her foot (owie!) was able to sneak
away for an hour with us to the nearby town of davenport, where we
visited a hardware store (linc's favorite wierd al song!) and got a
kid-sized toolbox with a hammer, some screwdrivers, and a few other
bits. linc loves it, though he seems to have his heart set on a drill.
that's gonna have to wait until at least age four...
ratatouille and ghost busters have been the films of choice lately. i
didn't have a phone, pooter or newspapers the whole time, which has felt
very limiting. i'm cutting back on my net addiction, but i need my hair
of the dog! fortunately, there was a dvd player, washer and dryer that
we made good use of.
the other really wild feeling i got was when we were driving out of
harrington. there was a point where we were surrounded by fields full of
snow, with a sky full of clouds, and the ground completely blended into
the horizon... you really couldn't see a dividing line at all between
earth and air. the black ribbon of road was partly obscured by fog and
falling snow. it felt simulataneously wide open, like free-fall, and
terribly confining, like being wrapped in cotton. unsettling!
like the answer to an unsent prayer, maria thomas called my phone and
offered portland crash space about 30 seconds after i got signal back.
corva, if you're reading this, i'm hoping we can connect either this
evening or tomorrow morning... i'll call when i know for certain where
i'm sleeping.
linc's been a great traveler, which is good news because i think i'm
driving back to kansas city with just him... i'll check craigslist, but
my original plan of asking clay to come out and ride back didn't fly
with him (understandably... by the way, he turns 14 tomorrow! happy
birthday, g4n0nd0rk!). know anyone who would like a lift to the midwest?
pass 'em on to me!
time to hit the road again...
