On Wednesday, as is our weekly custom, I took Lincoln to Union Station. While he's not usually patient enough for an entire planetarium show, I thought he'd do OK with the holiday laser and music presentation (actually, he fell asleep about midway, during Enya singing "Silent Night" in Latin). Afterwards, I struck up a conversation with the fellow running the operation.
The laser machine is different from the star projector (which is 30 years old, and one of only two that are still in use, and it's stuck in one position, and they have no money to get it fixed, but that's another story). The laser deal is apparently quite the dependable workhorse... it came with a bunch of preprogrammed shows, but the computers and software to produce your own animations using the lasers were included. He said he's messed around with it a little, and that he'd be happy to teach someone else how to do it.
It turns out that he's never... not in the three years that he's been doing this... had a single volunteer ask to work with the lasers.
I just turned in all my volunteer forms.
The idea of programming lasers to music is absolutely thrilling... I don't know how much time I'm going to be able to devote to this, and it's all on Windows machines (boo), but still... How cool is that?! I cannot WAIT to get in that seat!
