So a local blogger hates the mayor, and has mounted an effort to ban his wife from working in his office. Astoundingly, this council seems to be ready to vote on this mean-spirited ordinance soon, and once again I've been moved to write a letter:

Dear City Council members,

I want you to know that this is the first issue that has driven me to contact you since your election. While I do not agree with all of your actions, I recognize that they have been generated from genuinely good and positive intentions, and trust that common sense, respect, and your hard work will move the entire city forward in a progressive and generally sound direction.

However, I find myself reading more and more about this volunteer ordinance, and no matter how I turn it around, I just cannot see a beneficial intention in any way. Would you amputate a mechanic's hand because the grimy nails offended you? Would you discard an entire meal because the chef's cookbook was frayed? Why would you seek to hobble our city's leader in such an obviously mean-spirited and destructive manner?

There is a branch of martial arts called Aikido that uses an extremely effective method of employing one's opponent's own energies to deflect or even disable an attack. If you think Ms. Squitiro's actions are causing more harm than good to the city (frankly, not something I believe is true), then you need to think about ways to redirect or repurpose her energy instead of trying to block it... which, as you may have noticed, will only redouble the efforts on her and her supporters' parts to maintain the position.

Has this problem REALLY outweighed the other issues of this city? Can you honestly say that the hours you've spent on this situation will bring more good to Kansas City residents than anything else awaiting your attentions, or will it only drag other, more important efforts to a crawl?

Please consider your mandate to be one of cooperation and support of this city. If there is a problem, please use your creativity and intelligence to solve it, not compound it. Set aside your egos before KC council shenanigans become the laughing stock of blogs and newspapers all over the world... because, if you pass this ordinance, that's what will happen. Can't see that?

Thank you for your attention,

Katje Sabin
