wow, i got a lot of wonderful comments recently, and i just wanted to again say thanks to the wonderful, intelligent, kind and cool folks i count among my friends. i'm a very lucky lady.

we've been watching some movies lately... julia was really enjoying music by prince, and i pulled "purple rain" up on the netflix queue. i was actually surprised at how watchable it was after all these years. morris day was playing his part with his tongue firmly planted in his cheek, and while prince is a graduate from the keanu reeves school of wooden acting (one reviewer said he had all the pent-up rage of a caged mouse), he still was easy on the eyes. and of course the performance scenes still rocked hard. i'd just like to know what kind of deal that boy struck with ol' scratch... he hasn't aged a day since 1983.

we also got "team america," and i have to say i was a bit disappointed after all the hype and great noise bill made about it. sure, there were some laugh-out-loud moments (the "panthers" caught me off guard especially) but it was just so heavy-handed all the way through. amazing job with the puppets and scenery, funny songs, lots of reasons to like it but eh, left me lukewarm.

but we're still enjoying other last thursday, i whipped together a picnic dinner for us and three of julia's pals so we could go see a local production of "much ado about nothing." rich sets, sumptuous costumes, delightful delivery of a great play. linc cooperated mostly, only screeching when everyone laughed. gave me some faith in my ability to be a bit spontaneous with a little guy.

lincoln: a new upper tooth has finally emerged after much anticipation. he's pulling up and cruising everywhere, getting into everything. found and helped me empty the dishwasher yesterday. he thinks sneezing is hilarious. he said "boom?" after i said "big boom!" for thunder.

regarding a game... before we left on our trip, i gave bill his birthday gift of an xbox game, "psychonauts." the puzzle aspect of this game sounded cool, and so i tried it out. however, a little "animal crossing" experience did not cut it, and my miserable shooting soon resulted in a total standstill. bill's running my rasputin so i can see the game, but it's discouraging that you have to be a good gunner to enjoy a puzzle game. i guess i'm a "myst" girl at heart. i'm told that the creator, tim schaufer, wrote another game that might be more my speed: "grim fandango." anyone out there played this?

it's been nasty humid and hot lately, broken today by a string of spectacular thunderstorms. i checked the NOAA website; not much hope for anything more than a good light show. i wonder... if there was a tornado watch close enough, would i try to chase it? i might if i had julia with me to help film, navigate and baby wrangle. but just me and linc... probably not. i still want to take the NOAA severe weather class and catch a twister on film before i leave this area, but i know the chances are slim. still, a gal can hope, hmmm?

bill and i hit the gym at stower's today. i didn't do much... a 20-minute mile, but i did it at a fairly steep incline and kept my heartrate up in the target zone (over 135 for me, i think) for about 17 minutes of it. i can't mess up my knees, so i have to keep things slow, but adding the hill sure seems to rachet things up. i was going to end with some yoga and stretches, but the pingpong table was too tempting. linc slept through the whole thing, home with julia. i gave her the first strawberry from my little pot of strawberry bushes as a thank you. bill and i have been doing some long evening walks with baby and dog lately, but i got a big ol' nasty blister one sweaty night and it's taking a long time to heal. still, i've lost eight pounds since i've been home from the trip, and that's going the right direction!

bill got a gift membership to the cook's illustrated website and archives (THANK YOU aunt amanda!) and i've been poking around in it. i found a nice corn chowder recipe that i made last night, and there was an oatmeal cookie recipe i had to try right away: with chocolate chips, toasted pecans and dried cherries. since i had all the ingredients, i made 'em (even turned 'em vegan so jules could enjoy 'em too) and they were YUMMY. oh my, fresh cookies and a tall glass of lemonade really hit the spot yesterday afternoon! um... wasn't i just talking about losing weight? oh well...

the NPL will be meeting soon, without us again this year. this is a bummer, because there aren't any members in the KC area and i haven't found similarly minded puzzly folks out here yet. we did an equinox party that actually went pretty well, but then mr. lincoln came along and i haven't done one since. maybe this fall... i should get my hands on the last few sets of convention handouts and mine them for puzzle party game ideas. i sure hope we have the $$$ to go to the con next year. i'm really thinking the IJA will get along just fine without us... we're committed for this year, but i'm feeling a bit burned out by them. too much to do and not enough appreciation for me (i guess i'm not the ideal volunteer, satisfied with a job well done... i definitely enjoy the pat on the back now and then).

besides going to davenport, iowa, next month for the IJA festival, bill will be headed back to europe in september for another scientist powwow. his mom said she might be able to come out again and help with the baby like she did when bill was in france, which will be wonderful... he was just getting up to speed crawling when we were in spokane, and by this time he might be walking! also, my sister will be visiting kansas city with her husband ken in october, to see a chiefs game. ken's also smitten by lincoln, so they're staying here to get as much babyness in their lives as possible. julia will head to davis for her dad's wedding after we get back from davenport... about july 25... and then jules and clay get back here on august 1. so i'm going to have a week with no kids, bill at work, just me and linc...

well, baby has been pretty productive, unfolding all my neatly folded laundry as i took the time to write this. time to go pay the piper...

About your knees -- does your gym have those cross-training machines where your feet go in sort of oval shapes, and you also have levers to pull back and forth with your hands? Those things are supposed to be a terrific workout for the whole body, and also very easy on the knees. I tried them when I was just starting running, and the movement was a bit foreign at first, but it seemed like a good idea.

"grim fandango." anyone out there played this?

Yes! A bunch of us played it together over a series of evenings over at TheHouse way back when. It's great, you'll love it. (Do you guys have a Windows machine on which to play it?)

I agree, you'll love Grim Fandango. There are all manner of interesting puzzles, an entertaining storyline, beautiful graphics (possibly dated by this point), and lots of funny parts.
