clay's hat
i had made cordell a hat, ostensibly for christmas 2005, because i messed up on the slippers i made for the boys. but i still owed clay a hat. we had stopped by Florilegium, (warning: ugly web site, fabulous yarn/craft store!), and he picked out some trendsetter savvy yarn.
last week i tried making a hat for him from it, but it was (sigh) too big. rip-it, rip-it... tried again, got it this time:
clay and his new hat:

a flashed close-up, showing the yarn colors a little better:

(he asked for the little black wormy things on top)
so far, he seems to like it. since it's been 80 degrees, he's not really needing it yet.
i think i might rip out the journal cover i made for julia last year and try to knit a hat for her with it (jules, you reading this? should i go ahead and do that?)
now for the bitch:
the lace pomatomus pattern has kicked my butt pretty thoroughly. i can do it, but it takes soooo long to get any amount of progress, and i cannot keep count at all if the baby is running around, or if i'm trying to visit with anyone, or listening to the radio or a movie... i can pretty much only work on it in total silence and solitude. this is not making it fun at all, and i'm about theeees close to just pitching them. i'm hoping this little side trip to make clay's nice chunky FAST hat will make me feel a bit more validated as a knitter, instead of constantly having it rubbed in my face how lame i am at it.

Whoa, okay, no wonder you are having trouble with your lace -- the introduction to the pattern is all about how difficult it is. It's not that you are lame, it's that like most of us, you're not SuperKnitter. It's a very pretty pattern, and of course you should keep working on it if you want to, but there's nothing wrong with deciding that it just takes too much concentration for your current life and setting it aside for now. There are a lot of lace patterns that are more regular and won't drive you nuts. But, if you want to keep at it, good luck, and I know you can do it.
