I know what you mean about feeling like you SHOULD be further along or whatever. I think that's practically universal. I say fuck the SHOULDS. Wallowing in true emotion sets a great example for your family. Think of the women who pound their breasts and wail and then wear black and sit for a year or more before they do anything. Americans are awful at grieving and it shows in our rates of substance abuse and mental illness.
