It's still the Midwest, but I have found it to be an infinitely better fit for me than Kansas City ever was. The emphasis on bikes and public transportation, the attitude towards education, the incredibly international neighborhoods, the food (OMG, the food!)... KC has some terrific people advocating for all those things, but it's an uphill battle in a place that is soooo spread out and has so few resources to spend.
Maybe you need to come visit and see it for yourself, hmm?
