I think Cord's hat is gorgeous. You just need to find someone with a smaller head. I will be happy to send my measurements. ;)
Seriously though, it is such a bummer when you make something and it's not right, for whatever reason. I usually do okay knitting but sewing, ugh... I can never make it like I want to and I end up so frustrated. So I feel for you. But you've got a pretty good brain in there, I bet if you keep inputting experience, it will start churning out some great items. Hang in there!
