out and about

got up with the baby at 7-something, and made my favorite winter breakfast: scotch oats with brown sugar and milk. it takes forEVER to cook but yum is it good! took a big steaming bowl up to bill at 9, with some espresso, a biscotti, and a copy of the paper complete with his letter to the editor printed in it (i'd link to it, but the paper doesn't put them on the web).
got bill to work, and when i came home, the nice old neighbor lady came out to say hi to linc. she invited us in, and lincoln started wandering around and looking at her halloween decorations and being really cute. she offered to watch him for a while and i jumped on the chance. i rousted clayton and started to clean out the garage... it was a gloriously sunny but crisp day, perfect for hauling trash and sorting give-away junk. we hauled out a huge amount of crap (including a dead electric lawnmower, the torn and broken shelter from linc's birth-- got twisted up in a windstorm --, old books, the huge box from the pingpong table, a bunch of smaller boxes, and assorted dreck), cleaned out the van and loaded eight huge garbage bags full of clothes plus some consignable baby gear, freecycled the curb stuff, and finally reclaimed linc.
we took off, and dropped the clothes in a planet aid box. then we went to waldo pets, a local pet store (if i can support a local business over a target or a B&N or a petco, i try to do so) for dog and cat food. they have a huge aquatic section, and we bought fishfood to feed to the koi. there was a catfish in there that was probably two feet long! he was HUGE! i accidentally dropped a quarter in the pond, and clayton literally took the plunge for me to get it back (we left it on the fishfood machine so someone else could buy some food). linc loved watching the fish; good thing i had him in the sling or he'd have gone swimming for sure!
then we headed to the thrift store to find stuff for clay's costume. there was a radio shack close by, so i also snagged batteries for bill's pooped out calculator, plus some stocking stuffers. in the thrift, clay found a glittery top and suddenly changed his mind from being gandalf to being a "disco hippie." he found some lovely polyester bellbottoms, and had a brief skirmish with a teen girl over a pair of 4-inch platform boots (he was quite the gentleman, and relinquished the boots after he found some lower heels that worked for him). linc was being a terror, wanting to run around and wreck the place, so we boogied out of there without the requisite medallion or sequinned sunglasses, but we'll work on those later.
then we returned the loaner vase to the guy who has been hiring cordell (he said cord was due to show up for work in an hour... i didn't know that or i'd've sent the vase with him. oh well! then off to park day at loose park. clay was a little hesitant about joining in the football game already in progress, but then christian showed up and dove in, so clay got into it. they both lost interest and took off to wander a bit while christina and i made a huge fantasy order from her IKEA catalog and linc snoozed in the sunshine. i also spoke with mark, one of the dads who works for the KC Star, about possibly becoming a freelance writer for them. gotta cough up some clips...
then we headed towards home depot, but decided we were hungry so made a detour to taco bell, which made me think of julia (it was close to penn valley) so we called her and made another detour to pick her up first. fortified from our snack, we braved the huge aisles of HD... took us three different clerks before we found the window insulation film kits, and then tracked down the magnetic duct covers and some plaster of paris. they were having a big sale and it took some determination to stick to my shopping list but i did it.
then we had to plow through rush hour traffic to take clay over to skylar's for a sleepover. linc needed to stop and nurse, so we went in for a quick visit, then packed up and headed home again. fetched bill, folded more laundry, made a quick pasta dinner, and yet some more laundry before bed.
today i needed to drive jules to school... she overslept... and bill and i decided to visit andre's, a little swiss cafe, for some pastry and coffee. it was good, but made me homesick for my beloved konditorei..
after i dropped bill off at work, i decided to take advantage of yet another gorgeous fall day and visit the kauffman memorial gardens, a real jewel of the KC metro area. there were some german tourists who were charmed with linc and kept taking his picture. linc pretty much wandered throughout the entire place, and only tried to climb into the pools twice. he was far more interested in the drains and outlets than the flowers and butterflies, but he certainly enjoyed himself immensely. we spent about an hour there, just wandering and pointing at things and talking to the gardeners and trying not to annoy the tourists.
came home, talked with some homeschool moms about halloween plans (we'll be doing a homeschoolers party at the local community center... i'm in charge of blowing up a bunch of balloons and a couple of games; then we'll visit sailor's house for a bit in the evening, then a bunch of clay's pals will congregate here for some trick-or-treating, "the nightmare before christmas," video games and a sleepover).
now i'm home, avoiding more laundry by writing this!
