It appears to be that some of the rise in autism is due to diagnosis criteria. (New criteria also place many more 'highly functioning' people on the autism spectrum, who may have previously gone undiagnosed.) However, this does not appear to account for all of the rise.

I believe that current research is looking into environmental causes, sociological causes, and, yes, immunological causes.
