I was also wondering why PIXAR would kill a character. I have know about PIXAR films since it's first logo which was a gray back drop with the lower case letters pixar on it. I think about 1989 or so. I have ALWAYS depended on PIXAR to have an EXCELLENT film for my children, ranging from 31 to 4 years old. And yes, it did bother me enough that I immediately looked at my son when Muntz plummets into the green forest below. But my son (4 y/o) didn't flinch and was happy to see Carl, Russel, Kevin and Dug safe, and he said so. I got the PIXAR Blu-ray and DVD set which explains the reason is that there was no other way, they couldn't have them talk about what they each felt and have Muntz change. So the only option was to either have him get lost in the maze where Kevin lives or fall from his balloon. According to the staff, they felt there would have been too ackward a moment for the screen and the children wondering why two adults were talking - the dialog would have had to be developed taking time. I can only imagine how much work it took to go back and re-edit scene to make the movie work. I know that PIXAR takes great pains to make an excellent child's movie. Just thought you'd like to know.
