A glimmer!

Julia got waitlisted to Reed, and they invited her to send in "additional materials"... stuff like the reference letter she's getting from the president of Penn Valley, and her two awards, and YAY! I'm so freakin' proud of her. My baby girl, all growed up and ready to run away to school!

And tomorrow, I'm on a plane at ridiculous-o-clock a.m. Can't WAIT! Wheeeee!

That's so exciting!

Looking forward to seeing you soon.

Waitlisted plus "please send additional materials" sounds pretty promising! I can't remember, did she apply anywhere as a sort of "backup" school?

I'm in SF proper, in the Mission; dunno if there's any chance of hooking up with you while you're here. Will you be going to the Halflab gathering tomorrow night? Still not sure if we can make it, Danny has been ill all week.

How wonderful!

And are we talking Penn Valley, as in "next to Wynnewood"?

[identity profile] mamagotcha.livejournal.com 2007-05-10 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks!

No, I'm talking Penn Valley Community College.

Where she is the co-editor of the Spectrum online newspaper (she writes as Julia Newmiller).

A friend of mine has wonderful memories of Reed.

Will you be see-able during this trip?

[identity profile] mamagotcha.livejournal.com 2007-05-10 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, we've spent many happy hours juggling and visiting there, and know some awesome folks who are graduates. It's a great school and I think she'd do really well there.

Can you cut loose for a bit on Monday night? I think we'll be doing something dessertish around 8ish... any recommendations for a good visiting place near the Oakland airport? (I've got a car, so we can go a ways if we need to). I'd LOVE to meet you IRL!

I have about a million suggestions of good places to eat, yes. I'm dropping my phone number into your phone's email right now. Also Paula has my number.

Oh awesome!

[identity profile] ennienyc.livejournal.com 2007-05-10 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Ooooh.

Now you have to find people who were accepted to Reed and tell them it's horrible and they should choose their other schools, thereby allowing Julia to get in off the waiting list.

YAY(ish)!!

It'd be a bigger yay for an outright acceptance, though this does sound promising.

I'm rooting for her!

Yep, I'm excited! I hope Dr. Franklin gets me that rec letter soon enough to submit it.

One thing... I'd kind of rather you let me tell people things like this, or at least waited until I got home from work and had a chance to post first. Actually, I'd rather you called me and got permission before you opened letters addressed to me, too, if that's cool. Thanks.

Hope you're having a great time in CA!

Gee, I feel much the same. In fact, when my *partner* of 16+ years opens my mail, she tells me first (and then I call her a felon). But it's never important stuff when she does that, and I totally understand how you feel.

(And I agree about the announcing thing, although I also know how yer mom feels.)

[identity profile] mamagotcha.livejournal.com 2007-05-16 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
well, last time you said "yes, please open it! it's fine for you to open that stuff!" so i extrapolated to it being ok for this one. i won't do that again.

and i did try to call!

and i'm afraid that i'm just gonna brag on you no matter what. i'll try to wait a bit longer, but when you are braggable, you are really, REALLY braggable, and it's very hard to resist.

hope you're feeling better soon!

last time you said "yes, please open it! it's fine for you to open that stuff!"

Last time, I said to open it while I was on the phone. There's a difference.
