I miss the Midwestern scheme of functional alleys and cute little garages separating the back sides of residential lots. You don't see it much here in the West, where even older houses put the garage out front, making the house for the car as significant, architecturally, as the house for the people. In my Victorian-era neighborhood, the alleys - where they once existed - have been abandoned and taken over by back yards.
