I too am in the camp that they didn't kill him off. He clearly had 4 or 5 of those super-high-float balloons.
If a couple hundred of those balloons can hold a house up (And, as a student engineer taking a material science class I really want to know what that fire-place log-holder was made of. Incredible shear strength!) no doubt that 3 or 4 of them would help the baddie descend gently to the ground, where he was found by his dogs no doubt.
