One Year of Lincoln!

Yesterday, Lincoln turned one!
Linc had a pretty nice birthday, considering he hasn't had many to practice on yet. He spent some morning time with his dad, reading one of his two new board books, while Mom got a little rest after a wakeful night (more teeth on the way). I wanted to get up early and make his cake before the house got all hot, but it didn't work out that way. Clayton was invited to a birthday party, which was nice, but unfortunately it was at an outdoor pool with zero shade or safe space for the baby. Linc stayed home with Bill, and I would have asked another mom to bring Clay back, but the two who had kids south of the river wanted to visit a friend in the hospital, so I shelved that idea and volunteered to bring their kids back instead. I roasted for a few hours, finally fished the boys out and headed back south, stopping at the store for cake-baking supplies. Three pre-teen boys in the store were a hoot together... I only got them out with the promise of popsicles.
I made a banana cake from allrecipies, and we frosted it with whipped cream:

linc got a slab of it (after enjoying avocado and corn on the cob for dinner):

then he (predictably) got a bath, and played with his new wooden shape-sorter toy.

and then to bed. We listened to "Lincoln" by TMBG during dinner, and we sang "Happy Birthday" to him about five times! He also started saying "Daddy" and standing for the briefest bit of time on his own... plus, Bill taught him some cool dance moves (if you wave your index finger around, he'll start pointing both of his all over... our little Vegas Elvis baby!).
Today I took him with me and Julia to the Unitarian church, the first time in weeks. He did great in the little childcare room (not many other kids today, so it wasn't so chaotic), and we actually hung out there for another half-hour after the other kids went home. It was very cool watching him explore the place without distractions... he's quite the curious little monkey.
Then I took Jules and Clay and Linc to a mall to get them some clothes... turns out I forgot that this was the tax-free weekend in Missouri (a strange holiday they have, when everyone in the state goes shopping). It was an absolute mob scene and I almost gave up, especially when I remember that I didn't have the stroller. But Linc did great in the sling for most of the day, and Julia actually carried him for quite a while, too. We found most of what we were looking for, plus a pair of Cartman boxers for Bill.
Wow... that year flew by! Now, headfirst into the next one...

Date: 2005-08-11 04:45 pm (UTC)turns out bill lived in lincoln county as a kid, and one of his childhood homes was on lincoln street, but he didn't remember either of those things. it must have just been a comfortable, familiar name to him that was pretty unique to me. i love it! it's the exact right combination of different yet pronounceable, familiar yet uncommon. the historic aspect doesn't hurt, either.
